Video:  Premature Birth - Are we at Risk

What is prematurity and who should be concerned about it? You might not even gave a thought to an early arrival of your little one, but in reality 15 million babies are born premature each year. In lower income countries this rate can be as high as 12% or 1 in every 10 babies, compared to higher income countries where this rate is about 9% (World Health Organization).

Prematurity means that your baby is born before 37 weeks of the pregnancy is completed. This early arrival may happen as a result of various reasons, including, but not limited to: multiple pregnancies, infections and chronic conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure; however, often no cause is identified. There is also a genetic influence.

If every pregnant couple know the risk factors of premature birth, danger signs of premature labour, and measures to prevent premature birth the survival rate and outcomes of newborns can be much higher. And if you know what to do and expect in the unfortunate event of your baby arriving early despite preventative measures, both the couple and their baby’s outcomes will be much better and even special.
